YZ 250 FX Info and Bike Build Check-In

#1 Postby Willbilly » Fri Aug 11, 2017 10:34 am

I've looked over yamahaforum Yamaha-forum, ktmtalk, and thumpertalk, ironically ktmtalk seemed to be the best. Can anyone recommend a better forum for this bike?

Update: I've been using thumpertalk. There appears to be good information on FX's there. The FX forum is actually the YZ/WR forum. Sometimes you will have to sift for information. There is not much talk on the 2017+ models though.

Maybe the folks with a Yamaha are out riding them instead of talking about how to fix and modify them?

KTMTALK and THUMPERTALK are really just it.

What info do you need? I've built three FX's and have added every add on possible between the three......

Lot's of FX riders in the series we would use this forum to start.

I don't think I need anything just generally curious as to what other people say about oil selections, modifications they like or don't like, etc.

I use motul synthetic for motor oil, real air filter oil from maxima (no notoil). Here are mods on the current 17 I have:

Factory Connection linkage pullrod
Factory Connection revalve front and rear
Ride ENG 20mm Triple Clamps
Mako 360 Bar Mount
Unabiker Radiator Guards
Pro taper folding levers
Cycra Rebound Handguards
FMF 4.1 TI slip on
Rekluse Radius CX
KTM kickstand rubber band for YZF kickstand
Cycra Powerflow Plastic kit
Lot's of foam in the OEM skid plate including the front exposed portion at frame
Traction MX seat cover

Still need to install the cylinder works 270 big bore kit, Nuetec Nitro Mousses, and gas tank filter sock.

At 55 hours I just inspected valve clearance and am well within tolerance. I will change the top end before the start of next season I expect to be about 100 hours then and will check clearances again.

We use Yamaha modified synthetic which eliminated clutch drag, thanks DK. I installed GYTR radiator cages and welded GYTR braces behind them. I didn't like Unibiker guards. Plus one one Cycra Power Flow. We have a map from Raines I'll share and he told me how much to lighten the flywheel which will take some lathe work. I can do it for people if they wish. Add the fan kit and a higher psi cap and catch bottle.

I find myself in 3rd gear most times. With the stock 51T I was dancing between 3rd and 4th gear

What did you do to get your bike to 270cc?

I am still in research phase with the maps as I don't quite understand the effects of spark timing, but I have tried two maps. +3 fuel and +3 ignition timing across the board was too much torque. +2 fuel and +2 ignition timing across the board is amazing. I plan to try +0 fuel and +2 ignition timing across the board next.

Please share the Raines map.
